{"id":540,"date":"2024-12-03T11:21:20","date_gmt":"2024-12-03T11:21:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hillconsultinghrs.com.au\/?p=540"},"modified":"2025-05-05T21:24:58","modified_gmt":"2025-05-05T21:24:58","slug":"star-interviewing-technique","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hillconsultinghrs.com.au\/recruitment-practices\/star-interviewing-technique\/","title":{"rendered":"Do you know the STAR technique for interviewing?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do you know the STAR technique for interviewing?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"> It\u2019s a great way to probe at interviews after a nice opening question.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many managers claim they know the STAR interviewing technique (many actually don't know it at all) but we've seen it done wrong or poorly over the years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Our tops tips for the STAR techniques is:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do one or more extra probes, just getting an initial example is not enough.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Know which competency you're looking for and keep on track looking for that.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Agree what good looks like (with the panel or fellow interviewers) before the interviews begin so all scoring in the same way.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask for real actual examples - not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usingenglish.com\/reference\/hypothetical-question\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">hypothetical questions<\/a>, or that they do have this competency or skill in the workplace and finally \u2026<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure they are recent examples. Once STAR is done \u2026<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask again for another example (everyone has one great example so ask for two under the same competency) OR<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do the flip - this is where you ask a negative question \"Tell me of a time it all went wrong\" under the same competency.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The answers will be surprising.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The answers and insights (evidence) will be surprising.
